Kula Cattle Sketch
Was really drawn by the juxtaposition of the warmth of these common cattle against the forever-ness of the exquisite and uncommon blue ocean. Painting to come -

Polli's Flags
Polli's Flags
Flags in front of Polli's restaurant during the Fourth of July parade. They just made me feel so good - all those huge flags dancing in the wind. Nonchalant- and I feel taken for granted. So beautiful!
Varnished and ready to go...
Back to the paint after some much needed family time.

Cube Scape -
One of my Cube Scapes. I did this drawing some time ago, bur recently scanned it into my computer, sent it to my iPad and have had fun with it in the Procreate App.
I have another project (more long-term), I've been working on in Procreate that I'll begin to put up shortly - a really fun one. I've had to be more mobile than usual lately so I'm using my iPad to create. Really loving it and discovering interesting possibilities with layers etc...
Getting to paint with real oils a bit and looking forward to painting a great deal more in the near future.
I've also been doing some research into drawing apps lately and while my investigation has only been very cursory thus far, I can tell you that the Procreate app is just miles ahead of anything I've experienced. If you're considering a drawing app for iPad - can't recommend Procreate enough! It's also super easy to use in conjunction with other apps.

Clouds and Sacred Garden for 30 in 30
A couple of studies for the 30 in 30 challenge. Really needed some color today - so headed to sacred garden to work. New palette. Have a relatively new tube of Rembrandt Peony Red that I just love, but have never worked with - so Peony red, cad yellow, ultra blue and oxide red.

'Ohelo 'Ai Study
A couple of studies for a project and painting I'm working on. The painting is a very different treatment than the studies and much looser. My main criteria is "fun"! Will post the painting when pao.
30 in 30 Plein Air Challenge
These are September 1st and 2nd for a 30 in 30 plein air painting challenge for this month. Made a bunch of 4 x 5 watercolor paper supports to use. They have a watercolor ground and shellac on them as a barrier to the oil. Tomorrow's will be interesting in Hurricane Lester - but - no excuses eh?!? ;)

Organizing Tubes of Paint
Using a palette knife or gloves, put a bit of paint on the lid of each color so you can easily see what it is. Here I have them propped up in yogurt containers in an antique wooden Royal Crown Cola box. Don't have a drawer to lay them all out flat, so this works for me.
If the lids are black, put white acrylic paint on them first. After it's dry put the paint on. I used to hang them on a line by bending the bottom of the tube over a nylon cord as shown below - but that can get pretty heavy.

Hanamu Road in the Rain
Painted this little 6 x 8 inch in the pouring rain from under the back hatch of my car. It was so much fun - listening to the rain, getting a bit spattered and loving the process and fresh air, birds etc.... Ahhhhh.....

Ashly
This is my finished study from Tina Garrett's workshop. What an incredible experience. We had Soo much fun! Tina is an amazing teacher - very high energy, great sense of humor and just super generous and helpful! I'm really excited to do more figure work.
If you have a chance to study with her - you absolutely should!

Hui No'eau Oil Study
Painted this little 6x6 study on location. I love the Hui No'eau buildings and the red tiled roof - so much history and character. I found out a couple of days ago that I'm not going to be able to be there for the 2017 Maui Open Studio which is quite a bummer for me. I really loved it there, but we're going to try that location again for 18.
Meanwhile - I'll scout around and find a different location for 2017.

Maui Cane Burn
Here on Maui, part of the sugar production
process is burning the cane fields which is usually done very early in
the mornings when the wind is quietest. It's a common site for early
commuters headed down Haleakala Highway.
Alexander & Baldwin's Hawaii Commercial and
Sugar company, begun in 1870, is going out of business over the next
year and these cane burns will be a thing of the past. While it will be
a good thing for air quality - it will be deleterious for Maui's
economy and leaves an uncertain future for all of the currently lush
green cane fields.
The painting itself is 24 x 18 inches, oil on textured canvas over wood and custom framed.

Paia Youth and Cultural Center Doors - Art Maui 2016
This painting was done in my studio from a series of drawings and color notes that I gathered over a couple of afternoons on location at the PYCC. Though I was originally attracted to the design, it became, for me, an image about journeys we each must take alone.
I'm elated, honored and humbled that it will be included with all of the incredible artists in Art Maui 2016. Mahalo again to juror Lauren Faulkner. I'm very much looking forward to the opening in the Schaefer International Gallery at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center this afternoon!

Hau Trees
This is a 9 x 12 oil - painted primarily on location and tweaked in my studio. We were painting at one of the beach parks in Kihei, Maui. The Hau trees are just incredible and I'll be going back to paint more. The flowers of these trees come out a gorgeous soft yellow, turn a beautiful peachy red and then drop off. Please click here if interested in purchasing this framed painting. Mahalo
