Hui No'eau Oil Study
Painted this little 6x6 study on location. I love the Hui No'eau buildings and the red tiled roof - so much history and character. I found out a couple of days ago that I'm not going to be able to be there for the 2017 Maui Open Studio which is quite a bummer for me. I really loved it there, but we're going to try that location again for 18.
Meanwhile - I'll scout around and find a different location for 2017.

Value Sketches
Took a Fantastic one-day seminar from Joshua Been last week. He's a super dynamic, high energy guy. We had a great time and learned a great deal!

Painted this little study last week in Kihei. It's 6 x 8. Didn't have a lot of time, but thoroughly enjoyed doing this!

Maui Cane Burn
Here on Maui, part of the sugar production
process is burning the cane fields which is usually done very early in
the mornings when the wind is quietest. It's a common site for early
commuters headed down Haleakala Highway.
Alexander & Baldwin's Hawaii Commercial and
Sugar company, begun in 1870, is going out of business over the next
year and these cane burns will be a thing of the past. While it will be
a good thing for air quality - it will be deleterious for Maui's
economy and leaves an uncertain future for all of the currently lush
green cane fields.
The painting itself is 24 x 18 inches, oil on textured canvas over wood and custom framed.

Paia Youth and Cultural Center Doors - Art Maui 2016
This painting was done in my studio from a series of drawings and color notes that I gathered over a couple of afternoons on location at the PYCC. Though I was originally attracted to the design, it became, for me, an image about journeys we each must take alone.
I'm elated, honored and humbled that it will be included with all of the incredible artists in Art Maui 2016. Mahalo again to juror Lauren Faulkner. I'm very much looking forward to the opening in the Schaefer International Gallery at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center this afternoon!

Hau Trees
This is a 9 x 12 oil - painted primarily on location and tweaked in my studio. We were painting at one of the beach parks in Kihei, Maui. The Hau trees are just incredible and I'll be going back to paint more. The flowers of these trees come out a gorgeous soft yellow, turn a beautiful peachy red and then drop off. Please click here if interested in purchasing this framed painting. Mahalo
